Vale Dr ROGER CAPPS

Vale Dr Roger Capps

The Capps Medal has been a cornerstone of South Australian baseball since 1936, when Charles James Capps first proposed the idea of recognising the best A Grade player with a medallion. He went on to design, create, and present the award for 81 years before passing the tradition to his son, Dr Roger Capps, in the 1981/82 season.

Over the past two years, Dr Roger proudly began involving his son, James Capps, continuing a remarkable family legacy. Now, following Dr Roger’s passing, his family will continue this tradition ensuring the spirit, meaning, and history of the Capps Medal lives on.

Baseball SA General Manager shared:
“Over the last few years, I had the privilege of getting to know Dr. Roger Capps. I learned a great deal from him and truly valued the time we spent together. He was thoughtful, generous, and deeply committed to our game, and he will be greatly missed. Our community owes a deep debt of gratitude to the Capps family for their extraordinary work and unwavering support of the Capps Awards. Their legacy has shaped generations of baseball and will endure for many years to come.”

Baseball SA President added:
“The Capps name and the family legacy of their connection to baseball is invaluable. The passing of Dr Capps is a sad time for our sport, and on behalf of the Board and all of baseball in South Australia, we extend our deepest condolences to the Capps family. This legacy will continue through the generations to come.”

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Capps family. Thank you for everything you have given to our game.
