Australian Youth Women's Championships Recap

Published Thu 13 Apr 2023

The SA Youth Women’s team finished 4th in this week’s closely contested Youth Women's National Championships. This was the first time we have had an SA team compete at the National championships, after our inaugural team entered in the 2020 National championships were cancelled due to COVID.

The National championships were a fantastic experience and we look forward to developing the Youth Women’s team in future years.

It is important to recognize and thank the coaches and EO from the team as well as the many people who have contributed to girls baseball in SA in recent years and have played a role in achieving this milestone. In particular, shout outs to coaching from Bianca Smith, Dion Thiele, Scott Pratt, Kristen Webb, Jack Wade. The connection with the state women's team has also played a significant role in the development of the girls.

Some words from Head Coach, Dion Thiele:

Wow, what a tournament! The girls played 6 outstanding games of baseball throughout the tournament, starting with picking up a win in their first game of the tournament.

The energy from the girls throughout the games continued to push the team to throughout the game and was the reason we constantly found a way to compete and push the opposition right to the end of the game.

This energy was particularly evident in our last 2 games where we pushed Queensland (the eventual winner of the tournament), scoring the most runs against them while limiting their scoring opportunities......and the game against WA where we had an 11-0 shut out win and all except 2 runs were scored with 2 out.

Everyone involved in this tournament should be proud of what they have achieved and how the games were played. Hopefully the girls will remember this trip for a long time to come.
