RAMS RIDE SPEED AND PITCHING

By Robert Laidlaw

WITH JORDY GROSE AND Wilson Lee combining for a shutout, and speed to burn on the basepaths, Henley & Grange was able to pull away from the Tigers to win 7-0 at Glenelg in Saturday’s round five of division one baseball.

The victory was set up in the first two innings, where speed at the top of the order set the scene. In the first inning, Jack Partington doubled, stole third base and scampered home on the resultant wild throw.

Then in the second frame, Phil Acosta walked, went to third base on Partington’s single and came home in a double-steal attempt – 2-0 the Rams.

Fortunately, Grose was doing the job from the mound, conceding three hits for five strikeouts over the game’s first five digs, as that 2-0 lead stood up for Henley, while Lee threw the final four innings, for three scattered hits and six K2s.

It took to the eighth for Henley to add on a run, when Lee put one over the fence to make it 3-0, then a four-run charge at the top of the ninth blew the scoreline out, which featured hits to Partington, Koki Yonezawa, Landon Hernandez and Jet Clohessy.

PORT ADELAIDE USED THE long ball to effect in a 4-2 victiry over Northern Districts at Ingle Farm – the Magpies first win of the season, after four consecutive close loses.

At the top of the second inning, Jack Stead singled, Ethan Murphy hit a two-run home run and Samuel Steigert hit a solo dinger, to give Port a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Josh Whelan singled and scored on an error to give the Reds their first run.

But the Magpies answered in the fourth dig, when Michael Schrapel put one over the rightfield fence for a 4-1 advantage.

The game’s final score came in the bottom of the fifth, when Josh Whelan singled, stole second base and scored on an error.

Steigert recorded the win, conceding four hits for seven strikeouts in seven innings, while reliever Tyson McKee gave up one hit for five K2s in two frames.

In relief for North, Zane Tomaszek kept his side in the game, giving up just three hits and no runs for six strikeouts in five innings.

WITH BILLY DAMON IN TOP form from the mound, Adelaide defeated Kensington 2-0 at Plympton.

Damon pitched 8.1 innings for three hits and 12 strikeouts in his best outing for the season, while Henry Cann mopped up the final two batters of the game.

The Angels scored a run in the opening frame, when Max Tracey singled, Ty Forney walked, Stefan Welch advanced the runners with his infield out, and Damon hit a sacrifice fly.

Ali Tanner was also doing a good job from the mound for the Cardinals, and in five innings gave up three hits for five K2s to keep his side in the game. Kensington reliever Austin Hassani was also solid, conceding one hit for three strikeouts in three digs.

Adelaide scored its second run in the bottom of the seventh dig, when Brady Smith reached base on an error, stole second and came home on Nick Callaghan’s single up the middle.

BIG HITTING WAS THE name of the game in Sturt’s 10-2 victory over Southern Districts at Christies Beach.

It started innocuous enough, as the Hawks scored a run at the top of the first inning, when Luke Hansen doubled and scored on Drew Davies’s single.

The Saints took the lead straight away in the bottom of the opening frame, when Terrell Joyce hit a two-run single after Harry Knuckey and Mitch Lightbody had collected hits.

With doubles from Joyce, Dayton Mitchell and Matthew MacBeth, Sturt stepped up a gear in the third dig, scoring four runs.

Then in the fourth, the Saints found an even higher gear, as they smashed three home runs – by Lightbody, Joyce and Jackson Brebner-Russ – for another four runs, to go 10-1 up!

Over the next four innings Sturt could not add to its tally, while South scored the game’s final run in the sixth frame, when Carey McLeod ‘put one out’.

One of the reason’s the Saints are undefeated is pitcher Josh Tindall, who again gave a stellar performance from the mound, conceding five hits for six strikeouts over seven innings.

EAST TORRENS INFLICTED the first defeat on Goodwood this season, with a come-from-behind 6-3 victory at Payneham.

The Indians struck first with a run in the first inning, after Brodie Heeps reached on an error and came home on Josh Cakebread’s hit up the middle.

In the bottom of the third frame the Redsox drew level, when Zac Stroud and Carter Powell combined hits.

But Goodwood mounted a rally in the fourth dig and scored twice, after Griff Weber walked, Koki Takahashi and Peter Paech singled – to load the bases – a wild pitch scored a run, then Darren Fidge’s groundout scored another – the Indians did not collect a hit the rest of the way.

East Torrens again drew level in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs. Dylan Lester hit a dinger, Jay Sanderson singled, Dalton Probert doubled and Travis Underhill had a RBI groundout.

Then the big bottom of the seventh changed the game’s momentum, as the Redsox scored three times to set up their win.

Will Couzner doubled, Stroud singled and Charlie Ashcroft was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Lester walked to force in a run, which saw a pitching change, as Takahashi came on to the mound, but unfortunately hit Powell, which scored another run, before striking out the next two hitters.

Lester started for the Redsox, conceding four hits for six strikeouts in 5.1 innings, while Connor Yeatman collected the win for his 2.2 frames in relief.

Goodwood starter Tom Fitzgerald went six innings for seven hits and four strikeouts.

WOODVILLE MANAGED TO HOLD OFF Golden Grove Central Districts to record a 6-5 victory at Illyarrie Reserve.

At the top of the opening inning, the Senators scored a run when Callum Park singled, Drew Jannsen bunted and Cesar Perez had a RBI hit.

Then in the third frame, Woodville scored four times, after doubles to Jannsen, Perez and Mitch Fienemann, and Joel Chapman’s two-run home run.

The Dodgers managed to pull one run back in the bottom of the third, after Tom Walsh doubled and scored on a wild pitch, and another in the fourth, when Josh Conry and Walsh combined hits.

Wade Moore singled and came home on Andrew Chapman’s double to extend the lead to 6-2 in the fifth, although the Dodgers pulled one back in the bottom of the dig – Brandon Manzella walked, stole second, went to third on Brayden Caskey’s bunt and scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the eighth the game closed up, when the Dodgers mounted a charge. Issac Pearce singled, Jake Shotton was hit by a pitch and John Inglis had a two-run double to close the gap to one, but that was it, with no further scoring in the game.

AJ Verastegui pitched five innings for the win, conceding three hits for 12 strikeouts. John Inglis started for the Dodgers and threw 4.2 frames for 10 hits and six K2s. Reliever Nathan Holt pitched 4.1 digs for two hits and six K2s to hold Woodville in check.

WEST TORRENS SPOILED THE party for Gawler Rangers in the first division one game at the newly developed Karbeethan Reserve at Evanston Gardens, with an 11-7 victory – although the Eagles had to battle hard at the end to earn the win.

Over the first four innings the Eagles scored consistently to lead 6-0, with Mason Clavell hitting the first home run at the ground in the third frame, and Oscar Weber plating two runners with his single in the fourth.

The game came alive in the bottom of the fifth when the Rangers halved the deficit with three runs, after hits to Jake Rodda, Zak Heintze-Unger, Aiden Prokopec and Sam Bawden.

West Torrens steadied the ship with a pair of runs at the top of the sixth to go 8-3 up, after hits to Weber, Clavell and Jacob Scott.

As Gawler has shown so far this season, the game is never over until the end, as it mounted a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth dig to close the margin to a single run – Dylan Child led off with a dinger, followed by hits to Brad Przibilla, Rodda, Seb Heintze-Unger and Zak Heintze-Unger (a two-run single).

But the Eagles had the last say, with a three-run top of the ninth to make the game safe. Jasper Clark hit a triple, Shane Allen ran out an infield hit and Weber smashed a long three-run home run.
